Discover the secrets of a unique shave: interview with Thomas Villeneuve

Shaving is at the heart of the Plisson universe, which is why we take pride in offering you high-quality products to make every shave exceptional. To share this expertise, we interviewed Thomas Villeneuve to learn more about his personal shaving routine. Through this interview, you’ll have the opportunity to discover his tips and habits that truly make a difference.

Let his advice and expertise guide you in transforming your shaving experience.

What does your daily shaving and skincare routine look like?

First of all, it's important to understand that the skin is an organ that reflects our overall health.

Thomas’s advice: I strongly recommend getting into the habit of shaving in the morning after your shower. In fact, when you wake up, your skin is rested. After your shower, it will be clean and your pores will be open, which prepares the skin for shaving.

Can you walk us through the steps of your shaving routine?

For shaving, I use Plisson’s shaving cream. I take a small amount—about the size of a hazelnut—in the palm of my hand. If you want maximum effect, I recommend moistening your hand beforehand. Lightly lather the cream and apply it to your face. I apply the cream to both cheeks, the chin, and then the mustache area. Once the face is fully covered with cream, I wait a few moments (2 to 3 minutes) to let the cream do its job and fully prepare the skin.

The advantage of Plisson’s shaving cream: it contains a key active ingredient for preparing the skin—bisabolol. This rare and high-quality ingredient hydrates and protects the skin, helping to prevent cuts and that burning sensation you sometimes get on the face.

After a few minutes, I begin shaving. I prefer short strokes and only shave a few centimeters at a time. I also rinse the razor regularly—every 20 to 30 seconds—which helps maintain its effectiveness. I start with the cheeks, then move on to the mustache, goatee, chin, and finally under the chin. During shaving, I always use one hand to stretch the skin and the other to shave.

Thomas’s advice:
Once I’ve finished shaving, I take a small clean towel (a washcloth works too) to remove any remaining shaving cream. It’s a pleasant step that helps cleanse the skin and leaves no foam residue on the face.

What is the final step in your shaving routine?

I use Plisson's after-shave balm, which leaves a feeling of freshness and comfort on the skin, along with a very pleasant scent. I take two small amounts (about the size of a hazelnut) to cover my face.

What other Plisson products do you personally use in your routine?

In addition to the shaving cream and aftershave balm, I use the beard oil when I have a few days’ growth. It helps nourish and tame my beard and the results are very satisfying. In the winter, when the skin is more exposed, I use the hand cream and the anti-aging cream. The latter helps protect the skin during the winter and fall. In the spring/summer, I use the moisturizing fluid in my evening routine, which is lighter. It’s especially pleasant to wear when the days get warmer. So, my skin is cared for throughout the year with natural products to strengthen it.

Thomas’s advice:
If you want to add a facial cleanser to your routine, I recommend using it in the evening, when your day is done. You can incorporate it into your evening routine before going to bed.

What shaving instrument do you use, and why did you choose it?

I use the Fusion razor. Fusion razors have 5 blades, which makes shaving more comfortable, especially with regular use.

The more blades there are, the fewer passes you need to make. This also helps to avoid more cuts.

I also use a synthetic fibre shaving brush. It’s the model with an olive wood handle and a "High Mountain White" fibre knot. Since I have sensitive skin, the fibre is very gentle.

Do you have a favorite gesture or accessory that you could never do without?

The application of the aftershave balm, which is very pleasant and provides a comforting feeling for the skin.

What do you think of using a shaving brush?

The shaving brush is used to achieve a perfect shave. It is a tool that helps to prepare the skin even better: the hairs are lifted and perfectly positioned for the razor blade. Shaving with a tool like a brush ensures a close and highly precise shave.

Do you prefer shaving cream or shaving soap?

I prefer to use shaving cream. It’s quicker to use. Shaving soap requires more preparation, which I do enjoy at times.

What would you consider the ideal shaving ritual to gift to a man?

The ideal ritual: The Glabre. Composed of shaving cream and aftershave balm, these two products will become your allies for your daily shaving routine.

Do you have any advice for someone looking to rediscover traditional shaving?

If you want to rediscover traditional shaving, you can vary your tools. For example, try changing the brush while respecting your skin. You can also switch between shaving cream and soap, or vice versa. It’s always very important to use quality products for traditional shaving, which is why I can only recommend Plisson products. They will respect your skin and offer you an unparalleled shaving routine.
